We have completed both a community survey and SWOT analysis and the results are in.  Some surprising and some exactly what you may have expected.  We are ready to tackle the challenges that breastfeeding families in south MS are facing.  We need volunteers to get these projects moving forward.

WOW
50% of mothers said there maternity care provider did NOT talk to them about breastfeeding during pregnancy.

WOW
More mothers felt supported in breastfeeding by a facebook group than by the nurses at the hospital where they gave birth.

WOW
Most mothers are not aware of all the resources (some no cost) available to help them overcome breastfeeding challenges.

WOW
86% of mothers felt that local businesses were not supportive of breastfeeding.

WE CAN CHANGE THIS!
We can help more mothers feel supported during breastfeeding and improve the health of south MS mothers and children.

My oh my have things changed since I last wrote.  Like most people, we had some pretty big daily life changes in my house and priorities shifted.  Honestly, my volunteer work with the Breastfeeding Coalition slipped to the back of my mind.  But, that didn't last long.

One thing that has not changed in the last few months is that families are having babies.  And they want to give their baby a healthy start by breastfeeding - many are not reaching their breastfeeding goals.  Where are we going wrong?  How can we as a community are we allowing this to happen?  False information is shared. Families don't know where to turn for help.  Stresses and challenges make breastfeeding more difficult.  There are families that are not reaching their breastfeeding goals which means we have work to do.

Please join us next Thursday as we discuss what breastfeeding families face on the coast.  From this discussion, the SMBFC board will develop some specific project goals to address real challenges and create real change. (EEEK - I am so excited, I could just squeal)

Update from new President For years, Amanda Sterling, IBCLC and I chatted about the need for coalition in south Mississippi to bring together all the advocates, providers and resources that work to promote and support breastfeeding. Finally, an organization to get people talking to each other and working together!  In 2017, Amanda made it happen.  In these first two years, the organization has gone from a newborn to a full blown toddler.  I am thrilled to join the Board as President for  a two year term.

I have been supporting mothers one on one as a breastfeeding friend for 15 years. After many years as a volunteer La Leche League Leader, I took the step to become an IBCLC and now work in private practice.  I am donating my time and energy to South Mississippi Breastfeeding Coalition because - as important as that one on one support is for breastfeeding families to reach their goals - ONLY together can we identify and fill the gaps that causing families to not reach their breastfeeding goals.  We must come together.

The coalition has worked hard to create and maintain a comprehensive, local "Breastfeeding Resource Guide."  It is being distributed by every hospital on the coast to every breastfeeding family!  WOW - What an accomplishment.  The
guide is found online here.  And, I know it is being used because I am getting calls from families that need help and they used that guide to find me!  It is so wonderful!

What's next?  Well, I have some ideas of where to go from here.  But, more importantly, we need ideas from  everyone!  Where is the gap that is preventing families from reaching their breastfeeding goals?  Lack of good information?  No support at daycare?  Unsupportive employers?  Hit reply and tell me what you think.

Can't wait to hear from you,
Bianca Wooden, IBCLC
